new work, new journeys, New York...
New work...
I used a process called "open bite",
"Open Bite (Etching)
Any lowered area of an etched metal plate that does not hold ink. This can create very expressive effects, resembling pits and ridges."
My next step was to drypoint my own line onto the surface. There is an "honesty" about a drypoint line. It has the same fresh qualities of drawing with your "other hand", in my case, my left hand.
I enjoy the feelings of freedom I get from working this way.
"Drypoint
A form of printmaking and a type of etching where the lines are made by scratching directly into the plate with a sharp point. The scratched line throws up a raised edge called the burr which is the source of many of the drypoints’ advantages, as well as problems. The burr holds the ink as well as the groove of the line itself. This makes it suitable for creating rich velvety areas of tone. But unfortunately the burr is very fragile and wears down quickly in a press, so few copies of a drypoint etching are possible.
It is also hard to make beautiful flowing lines with drypoint, so it is normally combined with hard ground etching for best effect."

more new work...
Titled "fly away"
This is another etched aluminium plate print.
A wave? A bird?
New York City...
Yes, I like to think it's a bird...getting ready to take me on a journey to
New York, later this year.
I'm really excited about my planned trip to this incredible sounding city.
I am visiting family and friends, including some blogging friends too :) and of course the art!!!
I will write more about it as the trip gets closer...and let you know who I will be meeting up with there :)
But before the New York trip,
I have another short trip planned in Sept to Alice Springs...
New Journeys...
I've been invited over by my friend Raewyn.
Raewyn works for an organisation called Desart.
I will be catching up with some of the wonderful friends I made from the Marrka Wangka visit.
I have a planned trip to Papunya and we are having a tour of the West MacDonell Ranges through to camping at Glen Helen for the night.
The last time I visited our red centre, I was 15, 32 years ago!!!
I still remember the vivid colours of the earth and sky and the feelings of a sense of "something greater"...you can never forget that.
Of course I will be taking my camera, a sketch book, an open heart and wide open eyes.

hi jo, i love your new prints. the third one reminds me of irish mountains with the mist settling in and rain haze.
i'm very jealous of you going to alice springs. it sounds a wonderful trip!
I find your current work so very “arty” Jo! Compelling and original. Would love to see them in person. Glad to hear you have good things in the works. I find it feels pretty good to anticipate something special.
Hi Jo, I do love your prints, especially the first one. I don't always appreciate the viewer seeming to need to 'see' something in abstract work but I do see a lovely face. Very poignant. Besides that - I just love the lines. form and colour.
I do love your prints, I am so glad you share them..Your work is simply beautiful.

Jo - fantastic work! I love your explanation of the honesty throughout drypoint processes. Beautiful words.
Your printwork is amazing. Very lovely.
I am sure you will find a wealth of things to see in NYC. We have some great printmaking centres here.
that second image seems deeply earthy and erotic (maybe its me, ha!) :)
i was just looking at images of The Grand Canyon two days ago, i was there for a month about ten years ago and it sang to me; memory and spiritual power, how much i love that part of our country.
enjoy the big apple!
When you return from NYC, PLEASE post pictures of your sketch book pages. And, of course, your photos.
Dox and I have just come back from spending three days in the West McDonald Ranges. It was Amazing!! You'll love it when you go.
We're back in Alice Springs for a few hours then we'll head to Rainbow Gorge..( I think that's what it's called)
Along the way we've been to many aboriginal communities and checking out the art. I made a small purchase at one of them. Bring your credit card!
I am still drawn to these aluminium etchings...it does look like the sea to me (today that is!!)
Your upcoming trips sound fantastic. I have never been to the Red Centre (but am putting it on my list). How lovely to be visiting with Raewyn and others that you met recently.
I look forward to your photos as I love seeing these places you visit through your eyes.

First the deep breath in and then the long breath slowly out...wow these are beautiful. I love the line on these first two and the movement on the third is just that...delicate movement.
Big trips ahead...camping in Sept. Will there be tents? A true natural experience with wonderful connections. I'm too envious to discuss NY.!HA
Wow Jo! So many wonderful things to look forward to! I love your drypoint marks - all that lovely burring :)... Some things to see in NY too - The Metropolitan Museum of Art (too much for one days viewing!!), The NY Municipal Library (something from a librarians dream) and the orignal Tiffany's a la 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'(not for the jewellery, for the ritzziest toilets ever - there is a person there to hand you a fresh towel when drying your hands!). The trip to the Ranges sounds great - have fun on your walkabout and can't wait to see the photos!
Your new work is so inspiring for me! I love the prints!
Jo, Your work is really "travelling" I will try to catch up on the blogging now things are a little more settled.
Love J
