After an eventful and exciting week, last week, this weeks been just as eventful...but in a different sort of way.
Monday was our 1st Monday of the month art group get together...hence the above "spool", but more of that later.
Janette visited on Wednesday.
We had a great day, that started with some printmaking.
I had read about a technique using water soluble crayons. You use them to draw onto a sheet of acetate.
Working with damp paper, we used the press and a baren to pick up the print.

Not ground breaking stuff, but the technique certainly has potential...I think!
In my last post, I mentioned meeting a Hills artist Grietje.
She is a painter and does life drawing.
I may pick up a few life drawing classes with her. It's been 5 years since I did any of it.
I have been looking at Aussie artist Margaret Woodward. Worth "Googling" her name.
I'm flying up to Sydney next week for a couple of days, to see Warren :) who is working interstate allot these days :(
I'm planning a visit to the Art Gallery Of NSW while I'm there.

I picked up these seed pods at the op shop today!
They were wired onto one of those woven dried grass broomsticks.
The counter assistant commented on "all the work" it took someone to make.
I didn't have the heart to tell her what I had in mind.
To snip them all off with wire cutters...and voila, great "still life" potential.

Planted some herbs this week. All the old faithfuls, mint, coriander, Italian parsley, tarragon, thyme and oregano.

The Japanese Maple is putting on a show...and I love my front row seat!
And lastly...our art group challenge word for the month is " S P O O L "

Here is a first scribble...

And a scratchy little print...
Have no idea where this is going...

and like Tia, I'm not that concerned...
Tomorrow, Jesse my son who plays football, has a match up at Kinglake, one of the devastated areas in the bush fires.
I'm feeling apprehensive about going into the area and seeing it for the first time since that devastating day! But we are there to support, not only our team but Kinglake too. I will be cheering for both sides!!!

I never have the heart to tell the dear op shop ladies and gents just what I have in mind for most of the goodies that I gather! I use my secrets for both good and evil though.... last week I couldn't tell them that the $1 BARGAIN pure wool "dog" blanket I was purchasing would most probably become a felted part of a number of wearbles and dolls!!! I'm sure the price would have at least DOUBLED if I had!!!
Soooooo much fun, op shopping!!! xo
I wish I could come over and do some experimental printing with you one Wednesday! Margaret Woodward is one of my favourite Aussie artists too. I've been lucky enough to get her book. Enjoy the gallery in Sydney. Will the Archibald still be on?
Love your little story about taking the wire cutters to something you found in a shop, and great to discover others do the same as me! I just love the playful lines in the spool sketch and the white reversal of them in the print.
Thanks for a rich post Jo. I just enjoyed a look around at Margaret Woodward's work. I particularly enjoyed a figurative work called Uma. And I really enjoy your line work with the spool theme.
Jo, I've loved your blog so much please check my blog for something I've left you!
The spools looked fabulous. The lines in the first one got me really excited. I can't explain why, it's just one of those instinct things. There's something so very satisfying about that piece.
whew! a very eventful week! the seed pods are amazing! and like Shayla, Iove the lines in the spool drawing and also the print - Tia, mmmm - so sweet, xxo
Gosh Jo......love the spool!
Feel truly inadequate but it will pass.....I hope!
Lovely visit...seed pod story, planting herbs, art talk and wonderful line work on the spool...love spending time here!
Just love that old spool and all the rest too - lovely sketches and prints - great header - and so enjoyed reading about your week - will google the artist you mention - thank you Jo
Jo I love that beautiful old wooden spool, it tells a story of sturdiness, usefulness and has its own unique beauty... Your line drawing and print are wonderful. Such a wonderful theme for you girls (of course I'm a little biased as I do love fabric and thread).
I drove through the burnt out area a Labertouche yesterday...very gaunt where everything was burnt out, but also bright green growth everywhere...
The seed pod still life pleases my heart. I've purchased a few leather handbags at the second hand store...little do they know that I cut them up to use in my art.
so much goodness here, jo, as usual... love the print -- you make everything look so elegant! even water soluble crayons and acetate! and i also love your attitude about not knowing where the 'spool' theme is going... just right in my opinion. ; ) xo
p.s. have a great trip...
Love the cotton spool Jo, a piece of art in itself. Your print looks good too. Enjoy your trip to Sydney. You might be able to catch up with Judy.
You're a busy lady, and so creative. I love hearing and seeing what you're up to!
Tia, the relaxed beauty...infecting...
Long time ago I had a tiny collection of these wooden spools...we made "running-machines" with them
And my garden IS! to small for a bath-tube albeit it looks fantastic...
...and you week sounded great!
jo- love the pod picture. I would have done the same thing to them myself.
