We have a hand carved wooden bowl that sits on our coffee table.
It's great seeing people drawn to the ever changing contents of the bowl.
It's like a treasury of stuff, that is allowed to be handled...I encourage it!
As a child, I was surrounded by interesting stuff, including loads of art and curio's.
I was always encouraged to hold things in my hands, so I could study the finer details and get another sense of the object through 'touch'. A "sense" you cannot have if the item is locked away in a glass cabinet!
Our coffee table which is really an old Chinese day bed, is a gathering point for friends and family...The bowl sits happily for people to explore.
For those who haven't much to say, there is a meditation book that doubles as a friend, a concretion Jess found in a dam when he was two, a Kookaburra feather, a Japanese paper fan...or Buddha's meditation beads if all you want to do, is be still for a bit...
There are always little people, who like the harmonica or playing with the Thai frog musical instrument...I know I do.
Here is a peek of some of the things, that live in the bowl on the table...

Love this collection of shots that seem to hold little histories.
I just posted about passing on an inspiration award. Congratulations! I nominated you. Enjoy.
I spy a gorgeous pair of opera glasses there... and the buttons.. what lovely patinas they all have,
What a lovely post Jo.
Beautiful, Jo.
What a great idea, Jo. I love it and think I may adopt it.
Artist, Collector, Creator of Inviting Space; Jo. So welcoming and friendly. I would love to stop by and visit, pick up something in my hands and feel the connections. Thanks for the visual treat. I love to visit your blog.
I would also make a bee-line for that bowl. So many wonderful treasures within.
i love that you say "things that live" in the bowl... as if you never separated the material objects from their soulfulness... its just as an "old monk" would be prone to do; to keep these together, resonating and alive.
a wonderful day to you.
Beautiful post!
Jo, ruby and I remember your beautiful house and all your goodies.... I think it is time we came to visit you again and have another look in the bowl xxx
okay, I admit it! I lust after the wooden bowl - the objects in it are fabulous, but the bowl!? my oh my! I love the idea and have similar stashes in our house! xxo
this is such a beautiful and calming collection. Even the "coffee-bed"-ground fits in very well.
I once sat at a table in a living room in front of such a collection and asked the owner, what it was for.
He told me, he had lots of visitors who were smokers and since he didn't want them to smoke in his house they didn't knew, what to do with their fingers.
That was a great idea...
And i could use it well...
because I was a smoker at that time...
I love it all and know I would have a hard time focusing on conversation...too busy enjoying the items. Closing my eyes and just imagining the texture and feel...wow!!
So many beautiful treasures and textures, thank you for visiting my blog because now I have found yours.
What a fabulous collection. I believe you asked me once what a native frangipani looked like. If I'm not mistaken the seed pod you have is from a native frangipani.
i love the idea of having these in a bowl so you can handle objects that otherwise might be stored away in a cupboard - going to make up a bowl of my own too!
Wow!! Came to your blog through "Ink Haven", glad I found you, wonderful posts, lots of lovely images and artwork!!! Love the little curios, wish I could touch them! Leanne.
