Rosalie Gascoigne (1917-1999)

I went to see the first major retrospective of this wonderful artist's work,
at The Ian Potter Centre, NGV, Federation Square last week.

Federation Square A magnificent building in Melbourne.

Rosalie Gascoigne, transformed found objects into pieces of art, that spoke herstory, of life and land.
I was overwhelmingly moved by every single piece in this exhibition.
How exciting to witness such a sensitive artistic response from this artist.
At one point I was gazing at a piece titled "AIR" and a complete stranger came up to me an blurted out everything I was actually feeling, she just needed to let it out.
What joy and privilege to witness this artist's art, filled with humour, sadness, beauty, and soul.

Far View, 1990

All That Jazz, 1989

Sweet Lovers, 1990

Skylight, 1993

...it's on until March 15th.

I'd just want to say a sincere thank you, for all your heartfelt comments given on my last post
"L O S S ".
I just had to post about art today...
it also helps not having to face that word
"L O S S", everytime I open my web page.
Loss is everywhere I look at the moment...
The image of Rosalie Gascoigne and her work is like a beacon of light, somewhere to rest for a minute or two...
...I have put a link to the RED CROSS website on my side bar. If you can, please help.

Jo: I have been following on BBC TV and really feel for all those who have had such loss. Thanks for the link to the Red Cross.
I have seen Ms. Gascoigne's work on line. Very cutting edge. How lovely to see some in person.
Be safe. Love the new header.

Hi Jo, I've been to visit but have been a little speechless. Just wanted you to know that my thoughts and prayers are still with you. Glad you are able to take your mind off the fire sometimes. Your art scene is incredible.

Jo! what an amazing artist Gascoigne was - definitely ahead of her time - again, this just shows that 'art saves lives' - a way for you to deal with the pain of what is happening in your world right now! your new header is absolutely lovely!

R.G. Has always inspired me. That she created so much of this late in life Is another inspiration.

I remember seeing a programme about her on the ABC and was completely drawn in by her process and how she and her husband would roam roads and byways collecting the old and discarded road signs and wooden boxes she used for her art.

To see her work in the flesh would be amazing, more powerful and raw than the images. And it is wonderful over 40 milion has been raised so far... you look after your soul, dear lady..

Hi all, thanks for your comments.
Glad you like Rosalie...
Like everyone else, I'm feeling so flat with this massive disaster going on here. Hard to get the energy to do anything, other than what needs to be done at the moment.
Grrl, the tally is massive, up around 60M and still going strong. Media is bombarding the "human" face of this tradgedy now...it's inconcievable and my heart aches for every single person who has experienced the loss of a loved one.
Will try to get in the studio today...even just to tidy, if nothing else!
